Surrey Street improvement works set to begin

Accessibility Perception and Image
Croydon Council has announced that ten weeks of improvements works to Surrey Street will begin from Monday March 27th, as a result of which some market stalls will temporarily relocate to North End while the work is carried out.

The project which is scheduled to complete by early June includes the provision of new improved surface materials, a more levelled carriageway, new street lighting and the creation of a more ‘pedestrian-friendly’ environment.

While there will be disruptions to vehicular access on to Surrey Street, access for businesses and residents will be maintained at all times. Contractors will be working at the site for 12 hours a day, seven days a week, although noisy activities have been restricted and will only be permitted between 8am and 6pm.

Market traders will begin operating from North End from Monday, March 27th. The relocation will initially be run as a trial and if it is found to be unsuccessful, the market will be moved to an alternative location within the town centre.

Councillor Mark Watson, cabinet member for economy and jobs, said: “I am delighted the improvement works to Surrey Street will soon be getting under way. This is an aggressive programme of works that will see contractors working around the clock to deliver the scheme as quickly as possible and keep the length of time the market is closed to an absolute minimum.

“I am also pleased we have been able to accommodate those who wanted to continue trading for the duration of the works on North End and look forward to the reopening of a modern, upgraded and lively Surrey Street Market.”

The £1.1m renovation of the 700-year-old market will also see a number of other improvements made to the area to enhance the environment. These include improved signage to help visitors locate the market from the town centre and the installation of seating and architectural lighting.
