Celebrating 10 Years of Croydon’s David Lean Cinema

With National Cinema Day on 31st August fast approaching, it’s the perfect time to spotlight one of Croydon’s best-kept secrets: The David Lean Cinema.
This intimate, 68-seat venue, tucked away in the Croydon Clocktower, has been a hub for film lovers for nearly 30 years. Now, it’s marking a decade since its revival by a passionate group of local volunteers.

Named after Croydon-born director Sir David Lean, whose legendary films like Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago have left an indelible mark on cinema history, the David Lean Cinema originally opened in 1995. However, in 2011, the cinema faced closure due to funding cuts—a devastating blow to Croydon’s cultural scene.

That could have been the end of the story, but the local community wasn’t ready to let it go. A group of dedicated film enthusiasts and residents banded together to form the Save the David Lean Cinema Campaign (SDLCC), taking over the management of the cinema and reopening its doors in 2014.

A Cinema Run by the Community

The cinema is managed entirely by volunteers, who handle everything from ticket sales to film programming. This unique setup keeps the cinema closely tied to its community, allowing it to offer a diverse selection of films you won’t find at big multiplexes.

And it’s not just about the films—the cinema fosters a real sense of community with post-screening discussions and special events.

A Prestigious Patron

The David Lean Cinema also has renowned British actress Joanna Scanlan as its Patron. Joanna achieved critical acclaim and won a BAFTA Film Award and a British Independent Film Award for her powerful performance in the film After Love.

How thrilling to be honoured with the post of Patron of the David Lean Cinema, the shining beacon for all cinema lovers in Croydon. As a young person, independent cinema changed the course of my life and continues to do so. Grassroots cinema clubs like David Lean provide a dynamic source of pleasure and enlightenment. The irrepressible force of the movie as delivered by DLC’s enthusiastic volunteers is the weekly highlight of entertainment and culture for so many. I intend to support and promote fundraising and the team’s world-class programming. Join me at a film or two this year!
