Chef’s Pick 2026

Shining a light on Croydon’s independent restaurant scene

We went behind the scenes at four of Croydon’s vibrant independent restaurants, capturing the process and craft behind each head chef’s signature dishes.

From rich curries to creamy pastas and charcoal-grilled meats, our latest Chef’s Pick series gives a taste for the diverse range of flavours on offer across Croydon town centre.

Mithras

Step into the kitchen at Croydon’s popular Turkish and Mediterranean restaurant, Mithras.

Mithras celebrates the rich flavours of authentic Mediterranean cuisine, with a menu featuring freshly prepared hot and cold starters through to signature charcoal-grilled kebabs, hearty house specials, vibrant seafood and vegetarian dishes.

Watch the video to see three customer favourites come to life: the Supreme Whole Sea Bass, Adana Kebab, and Lamb Chops.

Crown & Pepper

Get a taste of the flavours that have kept customers coming back to Crown & Pepper Croydon for 20 years.

Blending authentic Chinese and Indian cuisine with a welcoming pub atmosphere, Crown & Pepper has built a loyal following thanks to its extensive menu of curries, noodle dishes and platters. Whether you’re dining in the stylish Buddha Lounge or watching live sport in the bar area, there’s something on the menu for everyone.

Watch the team prepare three of their most popular dishes: Salt and Pepper King Prawns, Desi Chicken Curry, and Singapore Rice Noodles.

Mahala

Mahala Restaurant has been bringing the marvels of Romanian cuisine to Church Street, Croydon for now 10 years.

Romanian food takes influence from its neighbours, placing a focus on quality ingredients and hearty mains, from steaks to mixed-grill platters and stews. Another key aspect of Romanian cuisine is the atmosphere, and you can always expect a friendly welcome from the team at Mahala.

Join Head Chef Dan as he prepares the pan-seared Sea Bass Fillet with crispy skin and a delicate, flaky interior.

Basil & Grape

Basil & Grape on George Street offers a true taste of Italy, pairing a handpicked wine list with a food menu packed with classic dishes.

Diners can enjoy everything from bruschetta and sharing boards of cured meats and cheeses, through to fresh salads, Roman-style pinsa pizzas and seasonal pasta specials.

David and Ali pull back the curtain on the making of two star dishes: the creamy Roman Carbonara and the spicy Roman Pizza Diablo.
