New green space and play areas in design phase for College Green

College Green is set for a major transformation, with residents and businesses invited to view the proposals and provide feedback at a public exhibition at Croydon College from 13–18 October, with a late opening on 14 October until 8pm.

Croydon Council, through the Growth Zone funded programme, will soon deliver a new public space, opening up the unused area that connects Fairfield Halls and Croydon College to the public and improving connectivity from East Croydon Station to the town centre.

The latest proposals are for a sociable green area. This could include a children’s play area, a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) for sports activities, picnic area and seating and café terraces. It has been designed to be inclusive and accessible, with lots of greening, including wildflower planting and trees.

The College Green designs build on Croydon Council’s wider Fairfield Masterplan. The designs have been revised to make sure they are suitable for the complex site conditions.

MICA Architects have been appointed by the Council to develop the designs which have been shaped for a sociable, inclusive and playful public space.

The project is funded through the Council’s Growth Zone Programme, a business rate uplift retention funding mechanism which is an innovative approach to fund and deliver this infrastructure and regeneration response.

Projects within the Growth Zone Programme are delivered by the Council with the support of partners, the Greater London Authority (GLA) and Transport for London (TfL).

College Green is one of ten projects under way in the town centre to improve connectivity, greenery and public spaces, and to celebrate the borough’s rich history. The programme includes improvements to Minster Green and building a new crossing in Wellesley Road to connect East Croydon to the town centre.

The transformation of College Green is a welcome step forward in creating a town centre that works for everyone – residents, businesses, and visitors alike. We hope that through this project the Council can deliver a high-quality, inclusive public space that supports Croydon’s regeneration, making the town centre more vibrant, accessible and attractive. If realised, this investment has the potential to enhance the experience for those who live and work here, while strengthening Croydon’s offer as a destination of choice.
Matthew Sims, Chief Executive of Croydon Business Improvement District (BID)
Multiple projects are taking shape to improve connectivity and public spaces in our town centre, and the re-landscaping of College Green is a key part of this. I remain committed to delivering a pleasant green space in our cultural quarter for all our residents. Do visit the public exhibition to see the designs in detail and have your say.
