Croydon BID and MET Police deliver match-funded extra patrols ahead of Christmas

Croydon Business Improvement District (BID) is boosting support for businesses and visitors this festive season by partnering with Croydon Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) to deliver 134 additional hours of police patrols leading up to Christmas.

Through this match-funded initiative, officers will focus on high-traffic areas from Thursday 11th December to Wednesday 24th December, offering a visible presence that reassures shoppers and helps businesses manage the busiest trading periods of the year.

Complementing the police patrols, Croydon BID is also extending its Street Ranger service from five to seven days a week, adding 700 hours of additional on-street visibility. On key festive dates – Thursday 11th, Friday 12th, Thursday 18th, and Friday 19th December – the Croydon BID Street Rangers will remain on duty until 9pm, providing extra support during peak periods of activity.

The additional MPS patrols and extended Street Ranger coverage directly reflect the priorities of local businesses. According to the Croydon BID Business Crime Survey, more than half of respondents (53%) reported an increase in crime affecting their business over the past 12 months. A large majority (83%) said they would like to see an increased police presence, while 76% called for more visible safety teams, such as Croydon BID’s Street Rangers.

The significance of the Christmas trading period should never be underestimated. Supporting the creation of a safe and welcoming environment for shoppers, visitors, and businesses is essential to fostering sustainable growth in Croydon town centre, particularly during the festive season. Our Business Crime Survey showed that local businesses are calling for more visible support on the streets, and this is exactly what we’re delivering. By match-funding extra police patrols, we are placing officers where they are needed most, providing reassurance and visibility during the busiest trading periods. At the same time, the Croydon BID Street Rangers are extending their hours to create a seven-day service, offering on-the-ground support, helping businesses manage peak times, and ensuring visitors feel confident as they enjoy everything Croydon has to offer. Working together in this way allows businesses to thrive, visitors to enjoy the festivities with confidence, and the town centre to feel welcoming and secure for everyone.

Together, these initiatives provide a coordinated approach that keeps Croydon town centre safe, welcoming, and well-supported for both businesses and visitors throughout the busy festive season.
