Croydon BID boosts town centre cleanliness with new four-day service

Croydon Business Improvement District (BID) has launched an enhanced four-day-a-week Street Cleansing Service, significantly increasing its commitment to making Croydon town centre cleaner, brighter, and more welcoming for businesses, staff, and visitors.

In direct response to member feedback, Croydon BID has significantly increased its street cleansing programme, doubling its previous capacity. The team now delivers 208 additional cleaning days annually in the town centre, up from 104. This equates to 3,328 hours of service each year, compared with 1,664 hours previously.

The enhanced programme enables deeper cleaning of high-footfall streets and public spaces, quicker removal of fly posters, graffiti, and grot spots, and more tailored support for both large estates and independent businesses.

The Croydon BID cleansing team now works 8-hour shifts starting at 4am on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Most of their work takes place in the early hours, ensuring the town centre is clean and welcoming for everyone who lives, works, and visits, and preparing Croydon for the day ahead.

The new service directly responds to priorities identified by BID members in the 2025 Croydon BID Business Crime Survey, which explored how the physical condition of the town centre affects perceptions of safety, business confidence, footfall, and overall satisfaction among workers, residents, and visitors.

The look, feel, and overall maintenance of Croydon town centre are a priority for our businesses. Through our activities, services, and initiatives, we aim to create positive experiences for everyone who uses the town. While our cleansing programme has long been recognised as a valuable service for members and the wider community, the reality is that Croydon needs more resources and investment. In response, Croydon BID has committed to doubling our cleansing service, providing more frequent and visible cleaning, faster responses to requests, and focused support for priority areas. This enhanced programme will make a real difference to our streets and help create a well-maintained town centre that people want to visit, work in, and be proud of.
Matthew Sims, Chief Executive of Croydon BID

Under the new programme, Croydon BID now delivers three days of cleansing each week, up from its previous two-day service, supported by an additional day from Croydon Council.

This strengthened partnership, coordinated closely with the Council’s Taskforce, ensures priority areas are identified quickly and that teams are deployed efficiently to address issues as they arise.

It’s great news that Croydon BID is extending its cleansing service hours. Their efforts have already made a visible difference, keeping Croydon cleaner, fresher, and more welcoming for everyone who lives, works, and visits. By sharing resources and working closely with the Council, we’re building on the work we’ve already done with the Town Centre Taskforce so together we can respond faster. Work like this plays a key role in restoring pride in our borough and creating a place where businesses can thrive.
Executive Mayor of Croydon Jason Perry

With more consistent, visible, and responsive cleansing activity, Croydon BID is turning member feedback into action – helping to create a cleaner, brighter, and more enjoyable town centre for all.
