Croydon BID delivers fresh summer planting and greening across the town centre

Each year, Croydon BID plants and maintains over nine greening sites and 137 hanging baskets across the town centre. This work plays an important role in bringing much-needed colour and vibrancy to our urban spaces – and this summer is no exception.

Croydon BID invests a total of £205,000 annually through its ‘Refresh’ portfolio to improve the town centre’s appearance, with £45,000 specifically allocated to greening projects. These efforts help soften the urban landscape, lift the mood, and create more inviting spaces that support business investment and footfall.

In 2025, Croydon BID has delivered 137 hanging baskets, each containing approximately 10 seasonal bedding plants, totaling around 1,370 plants that contribute vibrant colour to the town centre. Among these, Surfinia petunias stand out for their vigorous growth and continuous blooming, with each plant producing between 500 and 1,000 flowers during the season. This means the baskets alone are estimated to provide over one million flowers across Croydon throughout the summer.

Since September 2024, Croydon BID has also supported the planting of approximately 6,000 seasonal bedding plants across key locations such as the three beds in Wellesley Road, concrete planters on the High Street, West Croydon Station, Dingwall Road planters, the railing planters outside the Allianz Building, and the newly established large triangular bed at the Wellesley Road and Park Lane junction. Additionally, around 300 evergreen and perennial plants have been installed to enhance year-round greenery and add structure to the town’s public realm.

While the exact labour involved is hard to quantify, Croydon BID estimates that around 650 to 700 man-hours per year are dedicated to planting and maintaining these displays. This reflects Croydon BID’s ongoing commitment and investment in improving Croydon’s public spaces, creating a welcoming environment for visitors, residents, and businesses alike.

To celebrate and raise awareness of these greening efforts, bold new signage has been introduced at key sites, featuring playful messages like Blooming Lovely, Wild about Croydon, and Watch Croydon Grow – clear reminders that Croydon BID is proud to support these initiatives.

We are proud to invest in Croydon town centre, and our greening projects are a clear demonstration of how focused investment can deliver a real, visible impact. With over £200,000 committed each year to enhancing the look and feel of our town, these vibrant planted areas and hanging baskets do more than add colour – they help restore pride, shift perceptions, and create a more welcoming environment for everyone who visits, works or lives in Croydon.

Miles Watson-Smyth, Chief Executive of Windowflowers – the family-run independent horticultural business working with Croydon BID – added:

It is a great honour to work with the BID team in Croydon to help to brighten the streets with our flowers and plants. We really feel that our plants improve the wellbeing of the residents and support the businesses by attracting business investment and shoppers to the area.
