Croydon BID hosts women’s self-defence workshops for local employees

On Wednesday 26th March 2025, Croydon BID successfully delivered two fully booked Personal Safety & Self-Defence Workshops for women working in Croydon town centre.
Held at the LSBU Croydon Campus, these exclusive workshops were open to employees from Croydon BID levy businesses, with attendees representing a variety of sectors, including banking, hospitality, fitness, and retail.

The workshops were designed to provide practical, hands-on training in personal safety and self-defence, creating a supportive environment for women to gain valuable knowledge and confidence. The sessions included expert-led demonstrations and interactive exercises, equipping participants with real-world techniques to handle potential threats.

The workshops covered a range of important topics, including:

  • Understanding the legal aspects of self-defence, such as what constitutes reasonable force
  • Strategies for improving personal safety while commuting or in public spaces
  • How to make the safest and most effective decisions in challenging situations
  • Building confidence in using force if self-defence becomes necessary

The women-only sessions offered a blend of theoretical discussion and physical training. Expert instructors guided attendees through leverage-based techniques specifically designed to help women respond to common threats. Participants practised these techniques in a controlled environment, with a focus on self-protection and escape, rather than confrontation.

Feedback from attendees was positive, with many commenting on the value of the practical skills they learned, as well as the confidence boost that came from understanding their rights and knowing how to handle difficult situations.
