Croydon BID Street Rangers: Q1 2024 Impact Report

The Croydon BID Street Ranger team has made a significant impact on the safety and well-being of Croydon town centre in the first quarter of 2024. Their efforts have included business visits, welfare checks, crime prevention, and the recovery of stolen goods.
Established in 2022 and providing over 160 hours per week of additional uniformed patrolling, the Croydon BID Street Ranger team enhances visibility and offers reassurance to residents, employees, and visitors.

Their work is crucial in assisting businesses with recovering stolen goods, managing anti-social behaviour, and addressing various on-street issues, which without their presence may go unchallenged or unmonitored.

Q1 Activity Highlights

The Croydon BID Street Ranger team achieved impressive results. They provided over 1,600 hours of patrolling, covering 1,857 km across the town centre (the equivalent of walking from London to Rome). During this period, they completed 3,298 recorded business visits, offering support and addressing concerns. The team also conducted welfare checks with 38 individuals who were either homeless or potentially homeless, ensuring they received the necessary assistance.

The Street Rangers played a crucial role in supporting businesses with 111 incidents, ranging from identifying individuals involved in criminal activities to providing real-time action to detain and recover stolen goods. Their efforts led to the recovery of goods worth £3,500 and supported 14 police arrests, showcasing their effectiveness in crime prevention and response.

The Street Rangers’ work in Q1 has been marked by several notable successes:

  • Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO): The Street Rangers’ information and intelligence supported the police in obtaining a CBO for one of the town’s most prolific troublemakers. This success, six months in the making, was a direct result of the intel collected and their statements.
  • Emergency Medical Attention: The Street Rangers collaborated with multi-agencies and outreach teams to locate a vulnerable street-based individual in need of emergency medical attention. Their presence and the co-ordination of efforts allowed the individual to receive the necessary support.
  • Medical Assistance: On multiple occasions, the Street Rangers attended to calls concerning unconscious individuals, ensuring they received medical attention by calling and waiting for ambulances.
  • Reuniting Families: The Street Rangers successfully reunited a 75-year-old man with dementia who had been separated from his wife. After safeguarding and conversing with him for over two hours, they managed to safely reunite him.
  • Car Park Checks: Car parks, including Fairfield Halls and Wandle Road, which consistently raise a concern regarding safety and ongoing ASB, were visited daily in order to provide reassurance to shoppers and to record and monitor ongoing activities.

Moving forward, the Croydon BID Street Rangers will continue to play a vital role in enhancing the safety and well-being of Croydon town centre.
