The competition gives residents and visitors the chance to win exciting experiences at top Croydon destinations, including PLAYBOX, Fern, Exciting Escapes, and Basil & Grape – showcasing some of the very best of the town centre’s leisure and hospitality scene. It forms part of a wider campaign that celebrates the tram network’s ongoing role in connecting communities and supporting the local economy.
While the modern trams were introduced in 2000, the history of trams in London dates back nearly 160 years. The original horse-drawn trams first began operating in the 1860s before being gradually replaced with electric trams, only to be phased out altogether by 1952. Their reintroduction at the turn of the millennium signalled a bold new era, reconnecting Croydon and south London through fast, reliable, and sustainable public transport.
Since then, London Trams has evolved into a fully electric, step-free system, helping reduce congestion and emissions. Managed by TfL since 2007, the network remains a vital link between neighbourhoods and a cornerstone of south London’s transport offer.
This anniversary also marks 25 years since TfL was established in 2000. A new series of colourful posters will appear across the tram network this month, celebrating key milestones and innovations from the past quarter-century.
London Trams has played a critical role in Croydon’s regeneration and connectivity over the past two and a half decades. With step-free access and a fully electric fleet already in place, TfL has set out plans for continued investment in the network, including new vehicles with mobile charging points, real-time travel information and enhanced safety features.
Croydon BID is excited to help celebrate the legacy and future of this vital transport link and encourages residents and visitors alike to take part in the anniversary competition for the chance to explore and enjoy all that Croydon has to offer. To enter, head over to instagram.com/checkoutcroydon.
