Croydon BID’s enhanced cleansing service brings cleaner streets and quicker results

Croydon town centre is already seeing the benefits of Croydon BID’s enhanced Street Cleansing Service, launched in December 2025 following feedback from local businesses.

Croydon Business Improvement District (BID) has reported strong early results following the launch of its enhanced Street Cleansing Service in December 2025, with increased capacity already delivering visible improvements across Croydon town centre.

The uplifted service was introduced in direct response to feedback from levy-paying businesses and has doubled the BID’s previous street cleansing provision. The programme now delivers 208 additional cleaning days each year, increasing total annual service hours from 1,664 to 3,328.

Operating four days a week, the Croydon BID cleansing team works 8-hour shifts starting at 4am on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The early-morning schedule allows the town centre to be cleaned ahead of peak footfall, ensuring streets and public spaces are prepared for the working day.

The enhanced service enables more frequent deep cleaning of high-footfall areas, quicker removal of graffiti and fly-posting, and targeted support for both large estates and independent businesses.

Since the uplift, the team has completed full deep cleans of key town centre gateways, including areas surrounding East Croydon station and the immediate frontage of West Croydon station. A deep clean has also been completed on Fell Road and Mint Walk, enhancing the cleanliness of the routes surrounding Bernard Weatherill House.

Performance figures from the first month of the enhanced service show:

85 pieces of graffiti removed, with some cleared within as little as 24 hours
296 high street items cleaned, including benches, signage and bins
6,680 square metres of cleaning completed across the town centre

Croydon BID delivers the service in partnership with Croydon Council and works closely with the Council’s Town Centre Taskforce Team. This collaboration allows cleansing priorities to be identified quickly, and resources deployed efficiently to address issues as they arise.

Looking ahead, the focus for the coming weeks will shift towards increased support for small businesses. This includes washing down shopfront windows, signage, entrances and fire exits. So far, 25 businesses have already requested this support, which is available to all Croydon BID levy payers.
