Croydon town centre Public Space Protection Order proposed to tackle antisocial behaviour

Croydon Council has launched a six-week consultation on the renewal of the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for Croydon town centre, aiming to tackle antisocial behaviour.
First introduced in 2022, the current PSPO covers the town centre and surrounding areas including parts of South Croydon, Broad Green, and Addiscombe West.

With the existing order due to expire, the Council is now consulting on whether to reinstate it and whether any boundary changes or other amendments should be made. Residents and businesses can share their views via the Council’s ‘Get Involved’ website: https://www.getinvolved.croydon.gov.uk/

The PSPO is part of Croydon Council’s ongoing efforts to support the Police in holding those who cause persistent antisocial behaviour to account. Vulnerable individuals, including those sleeping rough in the town centre, will continue to receive support through partnerships with organisations such as Croydon Reach, Change Grow Live, and local health services, ensuring they are offered the help they need.

The Safer Croydon Partnership will oversee the monitoring and review of the PSPO, working alongside local Police teams to respond to antisocial behaviour hotspots. Croydon Police have voiced their support for renewing the PSPO, describing it as an “effective tool” in improving safety in the town centre.

Creating a town centre where people feel safe and welcome is priority for us all. The renewal of the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) offers added support in achieving that goal. The additional powers offered to police, through the PSPO, enhances their ability to tackle unwanted anti-social behaviour in our town centre. The renewal of the PSPO complements the work already being done via partners, and through the Croydon BID Street Rangers and Radio Link system, which provide a visible presence and real-time communication to help deter antisocial behaviour. By working closely with Croydon Council, local Police teams, and other partners, we’re continuing to play our part in making Croydon a place where businesses can thrive and people feel confident spending time.
Matthew Sims, Chief Executive, Croydon BID
We are working closely with the Police and other community partners to prevent and tackle antisocial behaviour in our town centre. A PSPO is a great way that the Council can use its powers to support the Police in their work. It is my priority to make Croydon cleaner and safer and, with our partners on the town centre taskforce, we are addressing issues that can make our residents feel unsafe. I know how much residents and businesses care about our town centre, so do get involved by having your say on this PSPO.
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon

Croydon BID encourages businesses and residents to take part in the consultation and help shape the future safety of the town centre. Residents and businesses can share their views at https://www.getinvolved.croydon.gov.uk/
