Croydon tram works and service changes in February 2025

Tram passengers in Croydon will experience temporary service changes in February as Transport for London (TfL) undertakes essential track renewal work.
The project, part of TfL’s ongoing tram infrastructure improvements, will see a section of track between Wellesley Road and East Croydon replaced, affecting services from Saturday 15th February to Sunday 23rd February.

Key service changes:

Saturday 15th February:

  • No trams will run between Reeves Corner and Sandilands, including the Croydon town centre loop. Local bus services will serve nearby tram stops to help customers continue their journeys.
  • No service between Arena and Elmers End.
  • For customers travelling to or from Elmers End tram stop, the 289 bus service will run every 12 to 15 minutes, connecting to Addiscombe and West Croydon.
  • Alternatively, Birkbeck tram stop is accessible via a short walk or local bus route 356 at bus stop B.
  • Services will continue on the rest of the London Trams network as normal.

Sunday 16th February – Sunday 23rd February:

  • No trams between Reeves Corner and East Croydon, including the Croydon town centre loop. Local bus services will be available to support affected stops.
  • No service between Arena and Elmers End.
  • The 289 bus service will continue to operate every 12 to 15 minutes between Elmers End and Addiscombe or West Croydon.
  • Birkbeck tram stop remains an alternative via a short walk or bus route 356 at bus stop B.
  • Services across the rest of the London Trams network will run as usual.
  • All roads around the works will remain open to traffic.

Alternative travel options:

During the closure, customers may find it easier to walk, cycle, or use local bus services. Routes 64, 119, 130, 194, 198, 464, and 466 will continue to operate but are expected to be busier than normal. Customers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys.

Additional maintenance work:

While tram services are suspended, additional essential maintenance will take place, including:

  • Highway repairs and resurfacing at Tamworth Road and Church Street.
  • Paving and drainage improvements at Church Street, Station Road, and Wellesley Road.
  • Platform works at Centrale, George Street, and Church Street tram stops.
  • General maintenance across the town centre.
  • Localised rail replacement by Centrale tram stop.
  • Rail repairs near Tamworth Road.

Completing these essential works simultaneously aims to reduce future service disruptions.

Planning ahead:

For up-to-date travel information, passengers are advised to check notices at local tram stops or visit the TfL website. The TfL Hopper fare remains in place, allowing unlimited bus and tram journeys within an hour for just £1.75.

Despite the temporary changes, tram services across the rest of the network will continue to operate as normal, and all roads in the area will remain open to traffic.
