Roll up, roll up - a taste of the circus is coming to town!

Is it Free?:

Performers from the highly acclaimed Covent Garden Entertainment Company will be bringing their own unique brand of showmanship to Croydon when the first of a new series of one-day ‘Street Live’ events takes place on Saturday, April 12th.

Delivered courtesy of the Croydon Business Improvement District, the event promises all the thrills, spills, glamour and side-splitting fun of the circus, performed by a host of the country’s best known street entertainers in North End from 11am – 4pm.

Topping the bill will be Betty Brawn, said to be the strongest lady alive!

Betty’s no ordinary lady. She doesn’t think twice about snapping steel chains, tearing up books and twisting pieces of solid metal. She’s entertained audiences across the globe and is sure to leave people spinning – literally – with her remarkable ‘human carousel’.

Acrobat and juggler, Dave Chameleon will be making a welcome return to the Town Centre. His daring one-man street theatre show went down a storm when he was last in town – the unforgettable finale involves him balancing on a three metre high wobbly slack-rope while spinning a ball in his mouth and juggling knives.

Clown, comedian and musician, Herbie Treehead is guaranteed to be an instant hit. A cult figure and Glastonbury Festival institution, Herbie creates his one man circus out of thin air as well as with the occasional bit of help from balls, balloons, battleships, a teapot, newspapers and sometimes even a pantomime horse.

Acro clown duo Hazel and Tash will provide additional comedy touches with their impromptu sets that combine balloon sculpting, ladder balancing and uni-cycling. Meantime, aspiring circus performers will be able to try their hand at a few tricks, courtesy of a circus skills workshop run by juggler and 'man of danger' Spikey Will and his wife Tabs.

Open to all ages, the workshop will include basic to advanced juggling skills as well as hula hoop, diablo, plate spinning, ribbon sticks and bubbles.

“We’re thrilled to be launching the first of our new, ‘Street Live’ events with such an impressive array of seasoned performers to entertain visitors and inject some extra fun into the Town Centre,” said Croydon BID chief executive Matthew Sims.

“This is the first of what we intend to be a regular series of events right across the year, offering a broad mixture of entertainment that is designed to ensure there’s always a great atmosphere in the town and to leave people with a positive lasting impression.

“I hope that as many people as possible will come and take advantage of all of the entertainment that will be on offer throughout the year and urge everyone to keep abreast of what's coming up and planned by visiting our website."
