ITV's popular Catchphrase and Big Star's Little Star presenter, Stephen Mulhern, will be kick-starting the Christmas celebrations here in Croydon, when he leads an all-star cast at this year’s town centre Christmas lights switch-on.
Croydon BID is once again pulling out all the stops to make sure that the festive season gets off to a memorable start by laying on a programme jam-packed with free, family-focused entertainment that will feature a host of local and professional talent from mid-day until 7.30pm in North End.
As the excitement builds from around 6.00pm, Stephen who is starring in this year’s Fairfield Halls’ pantomime, Cinderella, will take to the stage with fellow panto performers, Lisa Davina Phillip and Joanna Sawyer, to entertain the crowds ahead of the switch-on ceremony, when they will be joined by Croydon’s Mayor, Councillor Patricia Hayes-Justice.
Building on the success and popularity of last year’s event, the climax of this year’s show will once again feature a spectacular roof top pyrotechnics finale, thanks to support from both the Whitgift and Centrale Shopping Centres.
“Our Christmas lights switch-on has become one of the ‘must see’ events in Croydon’s annual events calendar, and thanks to the generous sponsorship of Gatwick Airport, we fully anticipate that this year’s programme will be extra special,” said Croydon BID chief executive Matthew Sims.
“This is the ninth consecutive year in which the town centre has benefitted from Christmas lights funded by Croydon BID and this year we’ve got a brand new, low-energy lighting scheme that will bring some extra sparkle to our main streets throughout the entire festive season,” he added.
“As ever, Croydon BID’s aim is to ensure that the Christmas celebrations get off to a rousing start and everyone is able to join in the party spirit, so I really would urge all those who work, live and do business here to support the event, get involved and join in the fun while taking advantage of everything that Croydon has to offer,” Mr Sims concluded.
Commenting on Gatwick Airport’s sponsorship of the event, Hannah Staunton, Gatwick’s Head of Community Engagement said: “We’re delighted to be sponsoring Croydon town centre’s Christmas lights switch-on which promises to be another fun-filled family day out. Our support for the event enables us to demonstrate our firm commitment to the Croydon area and to give something back to the local community.”
