Joanna Scanlan and Tilda Swinton grace the David Lean Cinema

The David Lean Cinema, a renowned arthouse cinema nestled in the heart of Croydon, experienced an extraordinary moment on Tuesday 18th July, as it welcomed two famous actresses for a special film screening.
The cinema’s recent patron, Joanna Scanlan, delighted the audience by attending the screening of the timeless classic “Girl with a Pearl Earring.”

Accompanying her was none other than her dear friend, the acclaimed actress Tilda Swinton. The two luminaries were full of praise for the volunteer-led establishment, commending its warm and welcoming atmosphere, and expressing admiration for its dedication to fostering a community of film enthusiasts.

In the 2003 film “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” Joanna delivers a captivating performance as the skilled cook working alongside Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of Griet, the iconic girl with the earring in Vermeer’s famous painting. The film, brought to life by Colin Firth’s rendition of Vermeer, masterfully captures the essence of art and passion, resonating with audiences even today.

The screening of “Girl with a Pearl Earring” also aligns with the ongoing exhibition of Vermeer’s captivating works showcased at the prestigious Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Joanna’s illustrious career spans both stage and screen, with notable TV roles in acclaimed series such as “No Offence,” “Getting On,” and “The Thick of It.” Her exceptional talent was recognised when she received the prestigious BAFTA award for Best Lead Actress for her role in the 2017 film “After Love.”

Tilda Swinton, an iconic British actress, has garnered high praise for her versatile performances in independent cinema as well as blockbuster hits. With numerous awards to her name, including an Academy Award, British Academy Award, and three Golden Globe Award nominations, she has left an indelible mark on the world of cinema. Her latest project, “Asteroid City,” features a stellar ensemble cast, including Tom Hanks and Scarlett Johansson and can be seen at the David Lean Cinema on Thursday 27 July at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

We are honoured to have welcomed two such wonderful actresses to the David Lean Cinema, and we really appreciate their support as we continue to fulfil our mission of bringing exceptional cinematic experiences to Croydon and its vibrant community. Our team of dedicated volunteers is committed to nurturing a film-loving and inclusive environment, and their presence and praise gives us a real boost.
