The initiative, led by Croydon Council, Croydon Business Improvement District (BID), and local banks, has seen the installation of yellow privacy zones around ATMs.
The installation ensures users have a safer space to complete their transactions without the risk of ‘shoulder surfing’ – where someone may attempt to observe another person’s PIN or financial details.
This move is part of a broader effort to enhance safety and tackle crime in the town centre, ensuring visitors, residents, and businesses feel more secure.

The markings at our cash machines have definitely helped customers by providing personal space and privacy when using ATMs. They have also helped deter individuals who may linger nearby asking for money. Overall, this is a positive step toward reducing distraction fraud at ATMs.

The introduction of privacy zones is just one of several measures being rolled out by the Council’s town centre taskforce, a collaborative effort between statutory, community, and voluntary organisations working to reduce antisocial behaviour and improve safety in the town centre.
