Statement from Matthew Sims, Chief Executive, following Prime Minister's announcement - 6 July 2021

We welcome the decision by the Prime Minister to remove restrictions on 19 July 2021.
This is an important step forward for the country, people and our economy, allowing our businesses and in particular those in the retail, hospitality and leisure sector the chance to trade at their full capacity. We hope the removal of these restrictions will, in time, support the return of confidence to our high streets.
There is no doubting that in recent weeks we have seen the green shoots of recovery with greater footfall, increased consumer confidence and more freedom. We clearly hope this momentum will continue up to and beyond 19 July 2021 as we work with one another as we look to revitalise our destinations as we approach the summer.
It is vitally important that towns and cities such as Croydon begin to see the return of the commercial sector, slowly but surely, in a managed way, keeping safety for all at the heart of the approach. For that to happen, we implore the Government to act on its promise and to deliver flexible commuter tickets as part of the ‘greatest railway shake up in decades’ for the thousands that would come into Croydon on a daily basis.  Without this support, our high streets will continue to struggle to recover.
