One year on: How Croydon Stands Tall is supporting Crisis Skylight

One year after Croydon’s giraffe sculptures brightened the town centre, the money raised from the ‘Croydon Stands Tall’ auction has already made a significant impact.
The £58,000 raised for Crisis Skylight Croydon has helped relieve homelessness for 68 people, prevent homelessness for 13, improve living situations for 85, and end homelessness for 70 individuals.

From August to October 2023, Croydon came alive with Croydon Stands Tall, a community-driven art event that transformed the town into an open-air gallery. Over 60 bespoke giraffe sculptures, created by local artists and schools, were displayed throughout the town centre, engaging locals and visitors alike. The event not only showcased Croydon’s creative spirit but also raised £58,000 for Crisis Skylight Croydon, a local homelessness support service.

Over the past year, the funds raised from Croydon Stands Tall have allowed Crisis Skylight Croydon to help 68 people move out of homelessness, prevent 13 from losing their homes, improve living conditions for 85, and end homelessness for 70 individuals. Crisis’ Information, Advice, and Guidance (IAG) services have also reached hundreds of people in need.

How the Funds Have Been Spent

A portion of the funds, £22,141, has been carefully allocated to cover essential items and services, including:

  • £1,600 for basic phones and top-ups, ensuring those without access to technology can stay connected.
  • £540 in food vouchers, providing vital nourishment for vulnerable individuals.
  • £835 for clothing, shoes, and underwear, helping individuals regain dignity and warmth.
  • £1,600 in travel expenses for members attending Crisis Skylight classes, GP appointments, or interviews.
  • £10,220 towards rent in advance (RIA) and deposits, enabling homeless individuals to secure long-term accommodation.
  • £3,840 for furniture and white goods, helping those who’ve moved into housing to settle in with essential items like beds, fridges, and washing machines.
  • £1,500 spent on bedding and kitchen essentials, ensuring people moving into homes have the tools for daily living.
  • £1,430 used for emergency hotel stays to provide short-term shelter during crises.
  • £216 allocated for toiletries for rough sleepers.
  • £360 for passports and photos, enabling access to essential services.
  • Miscellaneous or one-off spends such as bottled water in hot weather and laundry capsules, helping with urgent and specific needs.

The remaining funds will continue to support Crisis Skylight’s work in relieving homelessness, offering essential advice, and providing practical solutions for vulnerable people in Croydon.

A Community Effort

Reflecting on the success of Croydon Stands Tall, it’s clear that the event was more than just an art trail; it was a true community effort. Local businesses, residents, and visitors came together to support a cause that directly impacts Croydon town centre. The sculptures themselves brought vibrancy and life to Croydon’s streets, while the auction of the giraffes allowed that energy to translate into tangible support for those who need it most.

As we look ahead, the legacy of Croydon Stands Tall will continue to shape the town, with plans for future events that build on the same principles of creativity, community, and compassion. Thanks to the generosity of those who donated, bid at the auction, or simply visited the trail, Croydon’s homeless population has been given a lifeline — and there is still more to be done with the funds that remain.
