Planned works on Wellesley Road pedestrian crossing as part of £30m town centre regeneration

Construction is set to begin in July on a new street-level pedestrian crossing on Wellesley Road – a significant step forward in improving access between East Croydon station and the heart of the town centre.
The new crossing, being delivered as part of Croydon Council’s £30 million regeneration programme, is designed to strengthen the physical and economic links between East Croydon and the town centre’s retail and hospitality core.

The project is expected to be completed in time for the Christmas shopping period, delivering a welcome boost for local businesses.

The scheme will replace the former underpass, which was permanently closed in 2023 following a fire caused by antisocial behaviour. In the meantime, pedestrians can continue using nearby alternative crossings until the new infrastructure is in place.

Croydon Council is working closely with partners including Transport for London to finalise the designs, with technical approvals required due to the route’s importance within the capital’s transport network.

This project is one of five forming the first phase of town centre improvements being funded through secured investment. Alongside the Wellesley Road crossing, the Council will also deliver a refreshed public realm in Dingwall Road and George Street, new event programming and installations for North End, and enhancements around Croydon Minster to celebrate its cultural and historic significance.

The transformation of Wellesley Road into a more pedestrian-friendly connection is long overdue and essential in reimagining how people move between East Croydon and our town centre. This investment will play a key role in making Croydon a more welcoming and accessible for residents, workers, and visitors alike.

The street-level pedestrian crossing in Wellesley Road is part of my wider vision for the town centre – to make it much easier for residents and people working in Croydon to travel between East Croydon station and the town centre. The project is progressing well and we are continuing to work with our partners and local businesses. We will keep our residents informed as the project progresses.
