The first phase of the programme involved 72 hours of targeted improvement works across High Street and George Street. During this period, the team:
- Enhanced a total of 8 retail units
- Brought two long-term vacant units back into presentable condition
- Repainted 16 street furniture items including bollards, electricity boxes, and railings
The second phase of the programme focused on adding further colour and vibrancy to the town centre through an estimated 60 metres worth of vinyl artwork installations.
Artwork was first applied to two prominent hoarding sites on upper George Street, bringing to life spaces that were otherwise neglected and prone to graffiti tagging and creating a more welcoming first impression of one of the busiest pedestrian routes in the town centre.
The Smarter Streets Programme also involved revitalising three long-term vacant units on High Street and George Street. The removal of years of tagging and flyposting, the repainting of shutters and shop fronts, and the application of artwork vinyl to the windows have reintroduced vacant units that are far more appealing to potential investors while improving our street scene.
