The initiative represents a significant step towards modernising the tram network, with new trams expected to begin service in the late 2020s, pending the acquisition of necessary funding.
Four pre-qualified manufacturers—Alstom Transport UK Limited, Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles S.A. (CAF), Hitachi Rail Limited, and Stadler Rail Valencia S.A.U—are moving forward in the tendering process. The initial contract will focus on designing and constructing 24 new trams to replace aging models that have been in service for nearly 25 years and are increasingly prone to reliability issues.
The forthcoming fleet is set to enhance both reliability and passenger comfort across tram routes. The new trams will feature modern amenities such as redesigned interiors, air-conditioning, real-time audio and visual travel information, and mobile device charging points. Additionally, they will include a multi-use area designed for wheelchair users, pushchairs, and luggage.
The contract for the new trams is contingent on obtaining an appropriate funding package. TfL is actively working with the Government to secure the necessary capital investment for this important fleet renewal.
The introduction of these new trams promises to bring numerous benefits to the London Trams network, aligning with TfL’s commitment to modernising and improving public transport infrastructure throughout Croydon and surrounding areas.
