The eight inflatables, which made themselves at home across several landmarks, including Fairfield Halls and Croydon Clocktower, greeted those living in, working in, and – once word got out (quickly) – visiting the town centre.
Since its arrival, Unexpected Croydon has had everyone talking, with positive coverage in major titles, including Time Out London, Evening Standard, and MyLondon – which have a combined monthly audience of over 50 million.
Those eagle-eyed may have also spotted the inflatables on Good Morning Britain! The event was commended to their 1 million+ audience during the live news bulletin on 16th August.
It’s truly refreshing to see Croydon mentioned in positive headlines. The reception of Unexpected Croydon is a perfect example of why it’s so important to inject extra life, energy, and colour back into the town centre and how we can work towards changing negative perceptions of Croydon in the long run. Unexpected Croydon is just the tip of the iceberg, and I’m excited to see how our future projects and the launch of Croydon’s London Borough of Culture in 2023 will boost the town’s appeal further and put Croydon back on the map as a destination for arts and culture.
To attract people back into our town centre we must do things differently, and Unexpected Croydon is a fantastic example of that. It’s been incredible to see the responses from both the public and the media, who’ve been taken by surprise in such a positive way. A huge thank you must be paid to the building owners and occupiers who allowed for the inflatables to be installed. Without them, none of this would’ve been possible.
