During this time of closure, pedestrians wishing to cross Wellesley Road can use the street level crossing points at George Street, between Popeyes and Wendy’s restaurants, or at Bedford Park, between Green Park House and Lunar House. The main entrance to the Whitgift Shopping Centre on Wellesley Road remains open as normal.
We have had to close the Wellesley Road subway following a fire which has made the area unsafe for public use. We need to ensure that people in Croydon are safe as they go around the borough. It is unfortunate that the subway continues to attract antisocial behaviour making it unpleasant at times and now currently not an accessible walkway for those in the area. People can still get across the road by using the designated crossings nearby. Work is progressing for the new crossing over Wellesley Road to be delivered mid 2025.
