Winners of ‘Creative Croydon 2025’ art competition announced

Croydon Business Improvement District (BID), in partnership with cultural blog the Croydonist and design studio 31% Wool, is delighted to announce the three talented winners of this year’s Creative Croydon competition.

The work of Alex Mouette, Alec Saunders, and Shirley Shephard will soon take centre stage on lamppost banners throughout Croydon town centre from November 2025.

First launched in 2022, Creative Croydon offers local artists a unique platform to share their creativity with thousands of people in the heart of Croydon. Artists who live, work, or study in the borough were invited to submit three pieces of artwork, with no set theme this year – simply the freedom to showcase their artistic vision.

A panel of judges, including former Creative Croydon artists, carefully reviewed all submissions and selected three winners whose entries stood out for their creativity, originality, and artistic skill.

Each winning artist receives a £750 commission alongside the opportunity to see their work displayed in this large-scale public exhibition.

The winning artists of Creative Croydon 2025 are:

  • Alex Mouette – Currently studying Digital Arts at The BRIT School, Alex has lived in Croydon all their life. Passionate about digital artwork from a young age, Alex continues to explore new ways of experimenting with this medium.
  • Alec Saunders – Alec’s practice fuses cultural voices with sustainability, creating works that go beyond imagery to purify the air, reclaim discarded materials, and celebrate diversity while honouring our shared planet.
  • Shirley Shephard – A retired primary school teacher and lifelong Croydon resident, Shirley enjoys drawing and painting in water colours. Having once specialised in botanical illustration, she now focuses on portraying the natural world, reflecting her passion for the environment.

While the designs are yet to be unveiled, these three artists were selected from a fantastic range of entries, and we cannot wait for the public to experience their work as part of this town centre celebration of creativity.

Croydon BID extends its thanks to this year’s judging panel – Beatrix Finch, Thomas Oldfield, Melanie Russell, Divya Sharma, and Lis Watkins – for lending their expertise, and to all the artists who submitted their work, making the competition stronger than ever.

Creative Croydon highlights the incredible depth of artistic talent we have in our borough. From digital experimentation to sustainable practice and watercolour artistry, the winning entries reflect the diversity and richness of Croydon’s creative community. We are proud to showcase their work in such a public and accessible way for everyone to enjoy.
