Stepping up for Croydon’s businesses: Results of BID Street Ranger team uplift

Over the festive period, the expanded Croydon BID Street Ranger team devoted 1,296 hours to increased patrol coverage, completed 2,224 business visits, and assisted in 44 incidents across Croydon town centre.
From 20th November to 31st December 2023, the Croydon BID Street Ranger team welcomed two additional members to its existing team of four. This expansion allowed the team to increase their visibility and offer support, security, and intelligence to town centre businesses during the crucial festive trading period.

As a result, the team committed 1,296 hours (equivalent to 2.4 million steps) to patrols, completing 2,224 business visits throughout Croydon town centre.

The Croydon BID Street Rangers also continued to establish their strong relationship with the Croydon Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), providing critical assistance in 44 notable incidents.

Business crime, anti-social behaviour, shoplifting and incidents of aggression towards staff are becoming all too common up and down our high streets and town centres.

The expansion of our Croydon BID Street Ranger team, alongside our recent investment and increased police presence over the festive period, has offered the enhanced support, reassurance, and visibility our businesses tell us is important to them. These initiatives aren’t merely about the numbers; it’s about restoring a sense of security and safety among our community members during crucial trading periods. We remain committed to working with our partners to reduce the impact of business crime across our town centre and create a safer environment for all.

Shaun Webster, Director of Operations

Introduced in July 2022, the Croydon BID Rangers work with the town centre business community offering a uniformed presence, greater visibility while acting as a conduit to collecting greater intelligence between the business community and our partners including the Croydon Metropolitan Police Service (MPS).

Our Croydon BID Street Ranger team, trained in diffusing and de-escalating conflicts, can be contacted via the Croydon BID Radio Link to support situations of concern for businesses, employees, and member of the public.

Businesses across Croydon town centre are encouraged to sign up to the Croydon BID Radio Link to improve communications, intelligence gathering and on street support response. The Radio Link enables effective information sharing among all stakeholders, including police, hospitality venues, and retail businesses.
